Here are some figures I painted some time ago but finished off yesterday with a very quick base job.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Bofy7mb5MHJ8ugkzZQLmYKihfRGZ78KdYELsgLYwcwMplFim1BSBoZR33HxWyYjtNPrvMfKuUdX7xwzCRYEK4T56LDJ85VdLHaOSabrRBqhL04nYKFCezDP0WUq4zwFu5ob4rOkUq8E/s1600/steam1.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Bofy7mb5MHJ8ugkzZQLmYKihfRGZ78KdYELsgLYwcwMplFim1BSBoZR33HxWyYjtNPrvMfKuUdX7xwzCRYEK4T56LDJ85VdLHaOSabrRBqhL04nYKFCezDP0WUq4zwFu5ob4rOkUq8E/s320/steam1.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are now available from Black Pyramid Gaming although I bought them Design 28 which was run by the John Harrison. I have all the packs they produced and although they are not the normal style we get nowdays I like them. This is Isambard Kingdom Brunel with three steam navvies, Brunel died in 1859 and I think this figure will be used to represent his son Henry Marc Brunel who carried on in his fathers footsteps. </div>

Its a pretty good story and although Ive not yet finished I would highly recomend it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHrl7i49HTawkeCdbLc1xaSLR2fOrypupzsv6rX5EM9l6JFUVAmjjnJ7PzOEALEY2BuldwXsOTQgn7qPNT4pqHOHsgAtDh3srExSdV9weKcmy72MnSG_oUGwl_HbXFXrnC1GMitLOdlNY/s320/yard2.jpg" width="208" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In light of a distinct absence of any miniature painting I thought I would post some of the books I own which I feel would be of interest to gamers into Victorian London.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8qgaFE7mBBUcdMwFahywgTf-gBdNgD2-_701BkcSPo3sCu-85MlpxPUVMqaBq51bzxB6N7PbbInHPZfAbEXiQrJgQTcglKkjf5THaThYVrhzdR91A77zEcgDTAhinjmSoDLbetVGI7M8/s1600/vbk1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8qgaFE7mBBUcdMwFahywgTf-gBdNgD2-_701BkcSPo3sCu-85MlpxPUVMqaBq51bzxB6N7PbbInHPZfAbEXiQrJgQTcglKkjf5THaThYVrhzdR91A77zEcgDTAhinjmSoDLbetVGI7M8/s320/vbk1.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Victorian Underworld by Donald Thomas covers the seedy side of Victorian life, its not one I have read yet but should provide plenty of ideas for characters in gaming. Peter Ackroyds London Under is a fairly short book giving a overview of the London below the surface, although not just on Victorian stuctures there is plenty the of interest with chapters on The Underground railway, Londons rivers and streams (there is 13 of them) , sewers etc etc there is plenty of ideas for below ground boards.Sarah Wise The Blackest Streets I read a few years ago and for a detailed view of the the East End slums it is a very well written social history, if somewhat depressing by showing mans humanity to man. It tells the tale of the Nichol, a notorious slum near Bethnal Green.The Jack the Ripper biik is just one of many available, it seems to have a good covergae of the information available including many statements, it has about 6 experts give there opnion on who the Ripper was and it has a bibliography and a filmography.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtEz5RGx-Vgr_SzvrtJ6CJtREdONJiFU0XWvq745v2avaoq99pcdHr-SlhVZsSw424XhY7uFMErbCEc0cwfsDfIl8XPuOYfSoGB6XHfk1bumSlm5UR4YiQhXRF7FHdQM1izbpIXs09uAc/s1600/vbk2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtEz5RGx-Vgr_SzvrtJ6CJtREdONJiFU0XWvq745v2avaoq99pcdHr-SlhVZsSw424XhY7uFMErbCEc0cwfsDfIl8XPuOYfSoGB6XHfk1bumSlm5UR4YiQhXRF7FHdQM1izbpIXs09uAc/s320/vbk2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Dickins Dictionary of London 1888 is a very useful reprint. Written by Charles Dickens son in it is jampacked with info about almost anything you want to know. All the Gentlemens Clubs are listed (as well as the two Ladies clubs , one of which will be the basis for a EotD faction of mine), there is Omnibus information,the addresses of all the Embasies,detailed info on the make up of the Met Police Force etc, there are over 700 entries detailing leisure, banking, transport, commercial, church, and some observances on social behaviour.Excellent reference for EotD players who intend to game London.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have not yet read Victorian Sensation by Michael Diamond, its sub title of Spectacular , Shocking and the Scandolous of 19c Britains gives a good idea , it has chapters on Sex Royalty Murder Religion amongst others, should be good for some scenarios or back storys.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought The Railway Navvies in a oxfam shop and found it very interesting. It details the story of the navvies and provides some ideas for gang scenarios, apparently they often fought down Nationalist and religous lines...times dont change.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These last two provide some visual stimulation, they pretty much speak for themselves.</div>

However I did manage to get some paint on some Victorian Bobbies I have. With the activity of EotD and IHMN there are options coming for Victorian London Buildings. Sarissa are producing a likely looking range called Gaslamp Alley, early pictures can be seen here <a href="http://www.sarissa-precision.co.uk/">http://www.sarissa-precision.co.uk/</a> , they appear to provide a option to go either with terraced buildings suitable for the East End which is I suspect what most people are after to do scenarios linked to Jack the Ripper etc , but they do have some upmarket propertys so a posher part of London can also be modelled.<br />
4Ground <a href="http://www.4ground.co.uk/">http://www.4ground.co.uk/</a> are also producing a range which are linked into the IHMN release, they have posted a teaser of a police station on there facebook page , just what I need!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Looks like a pretty good replication of Leman Street Polics station in the East End<br />

also have some perfect buildings too.<br />
Looks like for those of us who like to buy there terrain we can at last get a Victorian urban table set up without too much pain. It will be something I look forward to doing in the Summer...if we ever get oneMorshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819412586784453862noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5557287069825895455.post-76883667376273833882013-03-26T01:53:00.000-07:002013-03-26T01:53:23.494-07:00EotD Kickstarter EndsMy first foray into a kickstarter , which seems to have come all the rage during my sabbatical away from the hobby, has ended. Westwind managed to get £92,848 pledged which I think they will consider a great success. Im not telling how much I pledged! <br />
I was looking forward to Empire of the Dead when I heard it was going to be released , then of course it came out during my break so I did not buy into it, well I have now. I actually started doing some work on my existing figures last weekend in preparation for the rules pdf which I hope we will get shortly. Although the game only needs about 7-8 figures per side , most of the figures will be eminently suitable for all types of other adventures.<br />
With the long bank holiday weekend coming up and my family away I am going to get some of my older figures finished off that I started many moons ago, and Im aiming to run a game on Monday using the introduction adventure on the website <a href="http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/empire_landing.php">http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/empire_landing.php</a><br />

With the arrival of Empire of the Dead Kickstarter:<br />

<a href="http://nstarmagazine.com/IN_HER_MAJESTYS_NAME.htm">http://nstarmagazine.com/IN_HER_MAJESTYS_NAME.htm</a><br />
there is just too much cool stuff coming out in the VSF world.<br />
I realy need to start blogging again , sadly the real world keeps interupting.Morshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819412586784453862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5557287069825895455.post-31065121747754708772013-01-31T00:51:00.001-08:002013-03-15T12:18:42.790-07:00BACKWell, where did 2012 and most of 2011 go? Its been a long time since I blogged, the reason being I took a break from the hobby. I did not visit my normal websites, go to gaming shows, do any painting or read any books realating to history/wargaming. The reason was I got a interest in something completely different which can be seen below.However I am now back painting again but a different period.I was going to set up a diferent blog to cover my other miniature interests but have now decided to put all my posts on this one...for the time being. The Victorian stuff will continue but for the time being I am back in the Dark Ages, more posts with updates to follow, in the meantime here is my baby...<br />

So a new unforeseen project has started , although to be fair I have always wanted to have a cemetary and a church for my victorian London project. This project has come closer to likelyhood from some new products I saw at Salute....more later on this. I have spent my spare time at the weekend painting up some Renedra plastic camp site bits I bought at Salute and a Ziterdes cemetary chapel I ordered form a newish gaming shop in Surbiton, here is a link to them <a href="http://www.heroesandlegendsgames.com/">http://www.heroesandlegendsgames.com/</a><br />

Abdul666 was quite correct that the airship was taken from one of the works of Robida.<br />
Looking through The Tale of the Next Great War I found this illustration<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqHmA-LQoVPPilR5zAgYuGwZkz3kFAzuJMXxuUb6KizF_xraLZRdaOXvxbKrirMUk6ZZI-e_nc8W0bMHd52PoUzNXZ-NsHnG_q5H6WM4Zw4vMrPIRr-EAgsW2nfU3WdJAmZGN_hVh-jyY/s1600/patent757.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqHmA-LQoVPPilR5zAgYuGwZkz3kFAzuJMXxuUb6KizF_xraLZRdaOXvxbKrirMUk6ZZI-e_nc8W0bMHd52PoUzNXZ-NsHnG_q5H6WM4Zw4vMrPIRr-EAgsW2nfU3WdJAmZGN_hVh-jyY/s320/patent757.bmp" width="320" /></a></div>Quite clearly the same design as on the cover of the other book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoGYJODQiG1-Jda57rPD75FdqNKciFnsSEofYcFBiosS7b0dDctUM7hpLZ1YFueIwIF76AW34hHMiq8cUeT4JxX3JSMLSeJRFUfDJy9GMDigfsPA5aqX6og0uxwd6KYJv00C8gl1zB7g8/s1600/DSCF4490.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoGYJODQiG1-Jda57rPD75FdqNKciFnsSEofYcFBiosS7b0dDctUM7hpLZ1YFueIwIF76AW34hHMiq8cUeT4JxX3JSMLSeJRFUfDJy9GMDigfsPA5aqX6og0uxwd6KYJv00C8gl1zB7g8/s320/DSCF4490.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Although there appears to be no comment in the text of The Tale of the Next Great War it has this annotaion underneath the illustration.<br />
<strong>'</strong>The first patent application (No. 747) for an armoured fighting vehicle was presented on 3 April 1855 by James Cowen and James Sweetlong.'This invention consists of an improved locomotive battery to be used in the field of battle, and is so constructed as to exert a most destructive force against the enemy , while protected from damage in return' <strong>'</strong><br />
<br />
This has piqued my interest, Im not sure the illustrations are directly linked to the patent application or not, google has so far not come up with any answers.Im going to see if I can find out more information.Morshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819412586784453862noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5557287069825895455.post-82482581985289025722011-03-13T15:52:00.000-07:002011-03-13T16:35:24.251-07:00Invasion Literature<u>The Stories</u><br />
For a few years I have been interested in Invasion Literature. This is a little known genre of late 19th and early 20th century comprising of books, articles and pamphlets focusing on 'what if' scenarios. The wikipedia articles gives a reasonable summary here <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_literature">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_literature</a> .<br />
Anyone interested in the genre should seek out the works of I F Clarke , a British professor. Although scholarly works they are very readable. Here is the first one I obtained<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUEE632URTdzPwLdb83rpf42R9YnNVu7jMiXI5Ol3bKSOksRZLAcVNT1GtrDSbF60Ylq46xAVhTfsCfclgQtZzptaStWnhy3a5BB9iSAVUaQYie4-xc1JyoxHXU8eDmLp1LFfl00TjYsM/s1600/DSCF4490.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUEE632URTdzPwLdb83rpf42R9YnNVu7jMiXI5Ol3bKSOksRZLAcVNT1GtrDSbF60Ylq46xAVhTfsCfclgQtZzptaStWnhy3a5BB9iSAVUaQYie4-xc1JyoxHXU8eDmLp1LFfl00TjYsM/s320/DSCF4490.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>From the title you can see this is a overall commentry fom 1763 till modern times. The most scholarly of the works and probably the least of specific interest of the three books by Clarke , but has got some interesting period pictures such as <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW4lGfhaPUMx3uOLqzF25EtoD59tbj-N8m6so4lZeoyC-V_EfJIqV-CScNK863rjS0x_qUftUcrrv1Qcjm6oqabE9pIAyvWYWfrJ1ACfdJZSmBXXmdWf-nNpLqmjrLjsF5S9o9jB-Hl4k/s1600/DSCF4494.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW4lGfhaPUMx3uOLqzF25EtoD59tbj-N8m6so4lZeoyC-V_EfJIqV-CScNK863rjS0x_qUftUcrrv1Qcjm6oqabE9pIAyvWYWfrJ1ACfdJZSmBXXmdWf-nNpLqmjrLjsF5S9o9jB-Hl4k/s320/DSCF4494.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>The appendices contain some useful lists of works and a chronological list of imaginary wars.<br />
<br />
The Tale of the Next Great War 1871-1914 contains 15 stories including the Battle of Dorking, about which later.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Although the largest group of stories are about a conflict with Germany , caused by insecurity of Victorian Britain and the future of the Empire particularly after the Prussian victory over the French in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 -1871 and the arming of the German nation leading up to 1914 , many other enemies feature in the stories including Russia ,France , Anarchists and even Martians. It was not just a British movement either, various other countries had articles published about invasions including the USA being devasted by a British invasion due to a falling out over fishing rights with the Canadiens (The Stricken Nation by Hugh Donnelly- reprinted in The Tale of the Next Great War) , Im pretty sure this was a actual grievance which fortunately never came to conflict.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Michale Moorcock edited two collections of stories which were published in paperback in the 1970s.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

If anyone would like to know which stories are in which volumes I would be happy to tell them , or I may even list them on this blog at a future date.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I managed to win off ebay a couple of the works by William le Queux , an interesting character to say the least <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Le_Queux">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Le_Queux</a> , he was very prolific here is another list of his works</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.xs4all.nl/~embden11/Engels/queux.htm">http://www.xs4all.nl/~embden11/Engels/queux.htm</a> .</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Great War in England 1897 was published in 1895 and details the invasion of Great Britain by German and Russian allied forces. Its pretty dour to be honest and seems to ignore the strength of the Royal Navy at the time by coming up with a excuse for the fleet being away. The country is eventually rescued by Empire troops coming to rescue the Mother Country , Bengal Lancers in Sussex anybody?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Lieut. Otto von Heynitz 16th Uhlans , Principle Aide De Camp to His Imperial Highness the German Crown Prince, I have not read it yet but it seems to be a piece of propaganda more than anything, I suppose most invasion literature was in one way or another.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmKpPDU-RT-J-Mntbne2sY2lDKle7pHOFBosvQz_xqEuCBpy6g2HD_dlzS8w0hqwwWWuY0slwIBZW_tk-ubWbnIyOol7OKS-6cmQtDDES6Kf68GW-dpOuGF1IDP_vAcU1u3JCQGsgxPhs/s1600/DSCF4493.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmKpPDU-RT-J-Mntbne2sY2lDKle7pHOFBosvQz_xqEuCBpy6g2HD_dlzS8w0hqwwWWuY0slwIBZW_tk-ubWbnIyOol7OKS-6cmQtDDES6Kf68GW-dpOuGF1IDP_vAcU1u3JCQGsgxPhs/s320/DSCF4493.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
A variety of authors of varying ability wrote stories classified as invasion literature. In the collections listed we have AA Milne of Winnie the Pooh fame, P G Wodehouse and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle all of whom wrote short stories.Perhaps the most famous piece of invasion literature is War of the Worlds by H G Wells , although slightly different in that it deals with a extra terrestial menace it was a thinly veiled warning of future wars as was some of his other works such as The War in the Air and Land Ironclads. Another famous piece of Invasion Literature is The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers which was also made into a film , dealing with the build up of German seapower prior to WW1<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jTwaU71QIASE-odbkCrZRX-t_7NZMrjdpl9A8XTzU5XkoPY5hQTYwInkG6u5gntOvLeY8F13deSHctPy7eBkKYnebCp1NIxYDPKyIV7Q8TrzcC0O5McVzZZSREDg8an9n8MQTn2O1OA/s1600/DSCF4496.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2jTwaU71QIASE-odbkCrZRX-t_7NZMrjdpl9A8XTzU5XkoPY5hQTYwInkG6u5gntOvLeY8F13deSHctPy7eBkKYnebCp1NIxYDPKyIV7Q8TrzcC0O5McVzZZSREDg8an9n8MQTn2O1OA/s320/DSCF4496.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The other notable authors include Albert Robida and George Griffith.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div>Of course most of the stories are out of print and many were only published in magazines of the time, however by searching on ebay and book websites such as ABE some publications can be found. Probably more practical is finding them online as they are out of copyright like this site <a href="http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22Imaginary%20wars%20and%20battles%22">http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22Imaginary%20wars%20and%20battles%22</a><br />
<br />
This looks like an excellent choice to get quite a a few of the stories at a reasonable cost, I have not ordered it myself yet as I already have some of the works and my reading queue is pretty large but I may well order it soon. <a href="http://www.ozebook.com/ozebook/invasionlit.htm">http://www.ozebook.com/ozebook/invasionlit.htm</a><br />

<u>The Battle of Dorking by George Chesney</u><br />
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_of_Dorking">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_of_Dorking</a><br />
This was the publication that started the flood of invasion literature in the late 19th century and also kick started my interest in genre. Living at the foot of Surrey Hills I was intrigued when I heard of this, I live about 15 miles away from Dorking (and actually equidistant to Horsell Common Woking ,the site of the first battle in War of the Worlds). Its written quite well compared to some of the other works and I have read it several times. It caused quite a stir when originally published in Blackwoods Magazine in 1871 was reprinted as a book many times and led to vigrous debate across the nation.Apart from the online versions and in Clarkes Tale of the Next great war and Moorcocks Before Armageddon listed above it can be bought from Amazon.<br />
Here is the original cover from the book.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><u>Gaming Invasion Literature</u></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There are plenty of opportunities to game this genre in a variety of scales and formats. Many of the tales are based on visions of futuristic war with the development of weapons and vehicles some of which came to pass, particularly in the air and on and below the sea, other stories use the forces available at the time but in a unfamiliar setting. Both types I consider to be in the VSF stable.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Battle of Dorking falls into the latter category, Prussian forces will be available in any of the ranges available for the Franco Prussian war , British forces in 28mm can be obtained from Ironclad Miniatures and Redoubt who do home service uniforms , I have both as well as discontinued lines from Wessex Games and a large amount of Cavalry fromn the old HLBS line, unfortunately I have not got any HLBS infantry and Im kicking myself I did not get them when they were available even though they are not of the same quality as Ironclad. In 18mm Black Hat miniatures produce a very nice range of British and Prussian in there Martian Empires section , although I have some of the Martian expedition forces I have not yet purchased any home service uniformed chaps , Im toying with the idea of ordering some before the Salute show as a price increase is coming. In smaller scales you can use colonial forces and just paint the helmets black for the British or pretend the experiment to use white helmets for home service uniforms that actually happened in the 1890s got approved. For the later part of the period you can use WW1 figures. Warrior miniatures produce a range called England Invaded including a ruleset which is very much influenced by invasion literature. In smaller scales aerial and naval warfare is well served by lines such as Aeronef from Brigade Models or the dreadnought ranges produced by so many.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Of course it need not just be German opponents or indeed even set in Great Britain , you can let your imagination run wild and introduce as much VSF as you wish.The thought of Bengal Lancers and Ghurkas standing shoulder to shoulder with Grenadier Guards in there bearskin helmets and the household cavalry in full ceremonial uniform fighting the allied forces of Russian cossacks and Prussian infantry across the fields and villages of Surrey and Sussex is irrestible.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The spur to post this on my blog came from a after action report by Luddite on LAF here <a href="http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=27115.0">http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=27115.0</a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Invasion literature has been discussed a few other times in the past too <a href="http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=7990.0">http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=7990.0</a> and </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=20584.0">http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=20584.0</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The VSF chaps ran a interesting campaign based on the Invassion of Great Britain on the forum too , here is an example of one of the battle reports <a href="http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=6220.0">http://www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=6220.0</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Dont look much like Zulus though do they?<br />

I will go into more detail about the game and my collection at a later date</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I cannot see myself painting that many Redcoats ....but you never know.<br />
<br />
I spent today working on the bases of my Zulus , I currently have 50 that just need the bases finished and shields, about 50 need a few bits of detailing and bases and shields and about 100 which are cleaned , undercoated and given a all over basecoat.Im hoping by next weekend to get the first 50 finished when I shall post some pics.I actually started these back in the autumn so dont think Ive done this in the last couple of weeks! I have developed a speed method (well speedy for me) to paint the Zulus as I am keen to paint lots and get them on a table next year. I also have approx 50 24th foot half painted.<br />
<br />
In a future post I shall consider the miniatures Im using in more detail but my Zulus will be a eclectric mix of the following ranges- New Foundry, Old Foundry, Rapier, Empress, Old Glory , Black Tree Design , Redoubt, Baker Company,Steve Barber Models and Wargames Factory. My unfortunate collecting habit makes me buy figures from different manufacturers even though I know they should not really be used together due to differences in size and style and I have got figures from all of the above and I even bought a few from Irregular, Minifigs and Hinchcliffe for the sake of completeness.<br />
<br />
Till next timeMorshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819412586784453862noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5557287069825895455.post-56151896696373970622011-01-30T15:07:00.000-08:002011-01-30T15:09:59.365-08:00Anglo Zulu War TargetsHere, for all the world to see , or at least anyone that reads this, I will set out my minimum requirement for the Zulu War project I have commecnced. <br />
The project is twofold really , firstly to complete all the miniatures and terrain required to reenact a campaign based on this book by Roy Jones and Mark Fastoso.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTite4fC7Whd6A2NrKcVmHWZWqiBwqNi5LZMHjaWM81SV_di6tBuMDyFvkugMY0hxTQ1NO7RxLBd6ZtIk1vLd78IvGd9AiTCWnu6pBKrIAJbA1OP_AC1cSR9XFWx24VEU7AfeGO8afQ24/s1600/84013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" s5="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTite4fC7Whd6A2NrKcVmHWZWqiBwqNi5LZMHjaWM81SV_di6tBuMDyFvkugMY0hxTQ1NO7RxLBd6ZtIk1vLd78IvGd9AiTCWnu6pBKrIAJbA1OP_AC1cSR9XFWx24VEU7AfeGO8afQ24/s320/84013.jpg" width="239" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;"></div><div align="left">This book is produced by Skirmish Campaigns <a href="http://www.milminusa.com/skirmcamp/scmain.htm#cc">http://www.milminusa.com/skirmcamp/scmain.htm#cc</a> , I have the Abyssinia book and the Tanga 1914 elite campaign and found them really useful. The Zulu war contaigns 11 scenarios form the start f the conflict hrough to the final defeat of the Zulus at Ulundi. The rules suggested are the Sword and the Flamewhich I own a copy of , with some modifications of which the most significant is 8 man units for infantry.</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left">The miniatures required to complete the scenarios are as follows.</div><div align="left">BRITISH INFANTRY</div><div align="left">48x24th Foot , 40x3rd Foot , 8xRoyal Engineers, 8xNaval Brigade, 64x80th Light Infantry, 32x90th Light Infantry,16x60th Rifles,32x13th Light infantry , 16x91st Highland Infantry ,32xNatal Native Contingent , 16xSwazi Allies and 13 characters. </div><div align="left">I do not envisage doing all the Light Infantry units as 80th LI can stand in for the others. This leaves a total of 261 infantry.Blimey!</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left">BRITISH CAVALRY</div><div align="left">15x17th Lancers, 6x1st Dragoon Guards, 6xMounted Infantry, 6x Natal Mounted Police, 6 x Colonial Volunteers, 6xNatal Light Horse, 8xBakers Horse, 8x Border Horse, 8 x Transvaal Rangers, 8 xNatal Native Horse, 8x Frontier Light horse, 6xRaafs Transvaal Rangers and 4 mounted characters.</div><div align="left">I have not yet worked out where I can double up on units, there must be some although a couple of the scenarios require mainly cavary units.So at the moment the target is 96 mounted, double blimey!</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left">BRITISH ARTILLERY/GUNS/WAGONS</div><div align="left">4 x 7lb RA guns with 3 crew, 3 x 9lb RA guns with 3 crew, 1 x RN Gatling gun with 3 crew and 1 x RN rocket tube with 3 crew, 5 Wagons.</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left">ZULUS</div><div align="left">49 with muskets , 140 with hand weapons, 16 with rifles and 6 mounted. </div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left">TERRAIN</div><div align="left">A 6 x 4 terrain board, Rorkes Drift Buildings , Zulus Huts.</div><div align="left">I built a 8 x 4 terrain board about 4 or 5 years ago to go with my sons Christmas present of Warhammer Fantasy Battles which I had painted for him, it was meant to represent Skull Pass and although I was happy how the figures came out and I made a few errors with the board which is split into 4 x 2 ft sections. I think I can quite easily use adapt this to use for this project , however it will need some surgery to it, I will also need a extra 4 x 2 section. I will post pics of this when I am working on it.</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left">I purchased a damaged Rorkes Drift set from Redoubt Enteprises at the Warfare show at Reading , here is a link to the item <a href="http://www.redoubtenterprises.com/shop/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=1355&category_id=40dc45d55f84bfb2a599af2e28a41e36">http://www.redoubtenterprises.com/shop/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=1355&category_id=40dc45d55f84bfb2a599af2e28a41e36</a></div><div align="left">The roof of the hospital was split in 2 and some floors had broken off, I havenow repaired the damaged parts by pinning and glueingthe rooof and floors using a two part epoxy glue,it seems to have come out ok.</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0mAlApVLvYblNlRI0XWsp-kbP0W5zZrdabRlSenacdS-lZeWIk_6gH4UmrUXcTBLg5cDb84nERDzoplzvk1gppOXPMM5zBhtPpIP08fqGRPVGwntBjohvIAX9TWx1YahhmB-zFHVfzjM/s1600/DSCF4397.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" s5="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0mAlApVLvYblNlRI0XWsp-kbP0W5zZrdabRlSenacdS-lZeWIk_6gH4UmrUXcTBLg5cDb84nERDzoplzvk1gppOXPMM5zBhtPpIP08fqGRPVGwntBjohvIAX9TWx1YahhmB-zFHVfzjM/s320/DSCF4397.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In front you can see some not yet completed Zulu huts , I have about 10 now plus a few other bits and pieces to form a Kraal (Zulu settlement) again I will post more info when I am working on them.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here are the barricades which came with the set, I dont think theres enough for the board Im planning and I will ahve to order some more.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSpmImNkZ6SguvuwqFfXi9xDCJZ8XUmaYWm0FEwySny1Y6hUnqkDX3JDShKrozZSCCNP3hO6L-5AISbMWLG1e-jp2g_pntQbJEcJAp2jvl0leQNJ5YklV4MzVCwxHHFRPZ6T7yo_eNgRY/s1600/DSCF4393.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" s5="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSpmImNkZ6SguvuwqFfXi9xDCJZ8XUmaYWm0FEwySny1Y6hUnqkDX3JDShKrozZSCCNP3hO6L-5AISbMWLG1e-jp2g_pntQbJEcJAp2jvl0leQNJ5YklV4MzVCwxHHFRPZ6T7yo_eNgRY/s320/DSCF4393.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div align="left">At the back is the toilet, kitchen, oven and the redoubt.</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left">The second part of the project is to paint the defenders of Rorkes Drift on a ratio of 1 to 1 , and to name each of them! Most of these will already have been painted for the campaign , but will probably require an extra 40 miniatures.</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left">So, thats a brief summary of my target for this year, whether I complete it im not too sure, it would be achievable if I didnt paint anything else, but I do intend to carry on with my VSF forces. </div><div align="left">Next post will be about the miniatures Im using for the forces.</div><div align="left"><br />

Last summer I started buying Zulus and reading up on the period and since then have been accumulating more and more .<br />
I have set myself a target of completing the project by this Sunday of next year , 22nd January 2012 , which will be the anniversary of the actions at Rorkes Drift and the battle preceding it, Isandlwana.<br />

First Horsell Common, now Cranleigh.<br />

Here is a picture of my back garden this morning-<br />

Last night Mors Junior and myself braved the snow and went to see Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds at the Brighton Arena - <a href="http://www.thewaroftheworlds.com/default.aspx">http://www.thewaroftheworlds.com/default.aspx</a><br />
<br />
Normally less than a hours trip, due to the massive 1/2 inch (sic) of snow it took almost four hours! Thankfully we left with plenty of time to spare and got there five minutes before the start. Two tee shirts and the very nice programme were bought. I have some Martians on order from RAFM which are based on the Space 1889 role playing game, these will be added to my Parroom Martians which I hope to start painting in the new year (which new year? I hear myself asking).<br />

Its still pretty congested but in a organised way, at least I can walk to the painting table without treading on something , although I normally paint downstairs in the kitchin but this involves lugging everything up and down two flights of stairs.<br />
<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I have also organised my Victorian themed books , this bookcase contains all my uniform guides, steampunk novels , classic Victorian literature, rules and anything else which relates to the period and hobby I post about on this blog. The lack of posting on my blog has not been due to a lack of painting (or indeed buying!) of miniatures and terrain but just time pressure. I intend to start posting again regularly as it acts as a spur to complete units. More to follow shortly.....Morshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819412586784453862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5557287069825895455.post-52285545690283510492010-10-01T07:22:00.000-07:002011-01-30T15:10:24.848-08:00Such a long timeIts been a long time since I posted anything. Real life has taken up a lot of time during the summer, however I have been doing a blittle bit of painting. From a VSF point of view I have some German Marines close to completion, some mechanical men need basing , I have finished a section of Hinterland Lady Hussars. I have also bought rather a lot at Salute and Colours , I shall post some pictures soon. Africa seems to be taking my mind up at the moment and I have started a Zulu project , I will probably start a new blog for my African miniatures and leave this one to just VSF.Morshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819412586784453862noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5557287069825895455.post-19710426332253121032010-03-07T15:59:00.000-08:002011-01-30T15:10:43.443-08:00Atlantis Report One<div style="text-align: center;">An Imperial Japanese Force has landed on a island off the south east coast of Atlantis. I remembered to take my camera tripod, it would have been a lot better had I remembered my camera too!<br />
I took a few pics with my iphone but Im sure a battle report will be up on LAF soon and I will post a link.<br />
<br />
Here is a picture looking down the table<br />

The Japanese Naval unit performed particularly badly and at one point ran away , however I will be ordering a unit of these for my force soon!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">On my other flank the steam tanks did well but were eventually put out of action , although the crew after exiting the smoking remains of there vehicles carried on the fight and in fact had some remakable success before succumbing. My central forces moved forward to within range of the British and basically got shot to pieces. General KK Taro spent the game runnning around like a headless chicken. The steam tank I had forgotten about a couple of times eventually got involved but incurred a damaged gun barrel in its first engagement and proceded to ram any vehicle it came into range of, with limited suceess.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I was quite keen to take part when it was first mooted last year, in fact its been the major spur to get some painting done. I have been allocated a small island just off Atlantis to game on rather than the main Island. This suits me as I hope to get Mors Junior and even Mors Minor involved, I have created a map so that we can see how the exploration of the island develops. The Imperial Japanese Army under the command of General Yugo are the first expedition to land. They will soon be involved in a skirmish with a so far unknown quasi military force. Later other forces will be involved, including most of my DA miniatures. This coming saturday I have been invited to game for a day at a pub in Twickenham by the other members of the board so I have been trying to finish off as many Japanese as possible. Here are my finished units so far.<br />

Both orders of Abyssinians are here now and I have based them today , hopefully will start painting them soon but I need to do a few things to my Japanese VSF force first , this will take priority for the next couple of weeks.<br />
This afternoon I finished the 3 white men each for my FP and for the Karl Peters expedition -<br />

From reading the forums I know the quality of these two ranges is not as high as Askari and a long way behind Empress offerings , however Im not disappointed so far, these had a bit of flash and the sculpt quality is what I would call old school but with a reasonable paint job I think they will be ok, service from both companies is meant to be excellent and so far I can confirm that.Here are a few pics of the Irregular order that I have cleaned up so far. <br />

The order also contained 5 musketeers and 3 light cavalry as well as some Savannah heavy and light cavalry and Savannah infantry.Morshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03819412586784453862noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5557287069825895455.post-86310658487601599762010-02-07T15:26:00.000-08:002010-02-07T15:29:06.170-08:00Elements of a new force on the way.I recently decided the unpainted lead mountain was out of control and that I would not buy anything more till Salute in April. I have failed. I was contemplating a Western Sudan force but have opted instead for Abyssinia , I am reading The Barefoot Emperor by Philip Marsden.<br />

Obviously a bit more than that was involved , here is a good link for the history of Ethiopia <a href="http://www.angelfire.com/ny/ethiocrown/">http://www.angelfire.com/ny/ethiocrown/</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I am planning on a force based on a later Emperor, Menelik II , who took on the Italians and gave them a good thumping at Adowa , the biggest defeat of a European nation in Africa during colonial times.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">There are suitable figures available from Irregular, Bicorne,Empress , Askari and Castaway . I have ordered a small quantity from Irregular and Bicorne to start off with, hopefully get some of Empresses at Salute , heres what they look like when painted by a master</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

Thats 39 figures finished off which I had started painting a year or more back , mainly the bases needed completing , and 81 figures finished from scratch since the begining of December. I know a lot people paint far quicker but by my standards its positively lightening , the Christmas break and a few snow days certainly helped.<br />

This has put me a bit behind schedule, I was hoping to have them finished by Saturday night at the latest then get a game in on sunday with Mors Junior which would allow me to finish off the Japanese during this week and play a game of G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T next weekend or the weekend after. However it was Mors Minors birthday party today so obviously that had to take preference!!<br />
I did manage to watch Kordas 1938 The Drum on telly though this afternoon , its a bit of North West Passage foolishness but I quite enjoyed it - Pathans, British troops in kahki and Wolseley helmets , loyal Sikhs and a hero called Carruthers ,got to be good !<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I also recorded a series about the American Civil War that was being shown on one of the satellite channels all four episode were braodcast back to back. Not normally a period I am interested in but I have a hankering to do a couple of small VSF forces in the future.<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A thread on TMP got me thinking again about West Africa, ever since I bought the African Knights book from Foundry I have had a small interest, not particularly piqued because I believed no miniature manufactuer did the armoured knights and I certainly am not up to converting them from anything. Much to my surprise I found out that Irregular do them , the figure on the right is light cavalry and on the left the famous quilted heavy cavalry<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Castaway Arts down under do a range for the Western Sudan too , appareantly they mix ok with the Irregular miniatures so a small force is now feasible. The city states of the West Sudan were cavalry based , mainly light cavalry in flowng robes but with some heavy cavalry as above. The composition of the forces varied from state to state but often allied under a dominate state as well, I need to do a lot more research before I start but at least I know that by combining the above two manufacturers and adding in a few mahdist sudanese that may be suitable I can do a force with sufficient variation of figures that I would find acceptable. Interestingly in 2002 Mark Copplestone was going to release a range, pity that never came off!<br />
